Good writing...

is an interesting topic.  It's been done to death already but I don't really care.  You can definitely tell when you see good writing, but it's sometimes hard to describe what MAKES good writing.  Topic is an extremely important factor to good writing (I won't deny that).  However, you could have the most fascinating topic known to mankind and if the grammar is crap (poor sentence structure and bad spelling) the piece is avoided like the plague.

One of the most important things in my opinion is flow.  When you write, one idea should flow into another.  From sentence to sentence, paragraph to paragraph and topic to topic.  For the most part, writing should be done in a similar style as one thinks.  One concept should flow to the next in a way that is smooth (though not necessarily slow paced).  Your reader should be able to understand how you moved from one idea or concept to the next, from beginning to end.  When a piece of writing jumps from one thing to another with nothing to connect the separate thoughts it becomes tedious to read.  Thus leading the reader to put your hard work to the side in disgust and/or frustration.

No one likes being yanked from place to place (and most don't enjoy too slow a pace either).  Admittedly, with some writing ideas/styles this works.  However, there is still usually some underlying sense of flow to organize what's going on.  Detail is an important aspect of flow and so is grammar.  The amount of detail you put into your writing can establish background, reasoning, color and a whole variety of other things important to your work.  While good grammar can make it simpler to express what you're trying to convey.  The reader doesn't have to work to figure out what you're trying to say.

Always keep this in mind.  In today's society, people want things fast and easy to absorb (even if they're not able to understand).  If you write for others, or even just yourself, you need to put in the effort it takes to make your work legible.  That way it's something you can really take pride and satisfaction in.

Admittedly, I don't write too much myself...but I can safely say that this is what I notice in writing that is done well.  And what I would aspire to if I wrote more.  And if I did not manage that with this entry, I apologize but I'm still working on it.
